I am the mother of a baby who benefits from the free childcare scheme. My idea is that when the babies are sick and they produce a medical certificate, the hours allocated for missing school are not deducted. That way when the parents have a day off they can spend it with the baby and not worry that they are going to be charged if the baby misses school. Childcare is not obligatory, not even kindergarten is obligatory! This would reduce the incidence of sick children turning up at school.
